Just got back from the body shop, Oh yea, so ends up the body work i got done 6 months back, was shit My fender is starting to bubble ever so slightyl, and instead of welding, he just bondoed the whole entire thing . So now im pissed off, The shop im doing a website for, doesnt want to paint over that shit, so i have to take care of it. And theres a bunch of dents i have to take care of also, this f*cker better get his ass in gear and finish my god damn car! UGH! How hard is sanding down and bondo-ing anyways? I might be interested in doing it myself

all i have to say is...it could be worse.

late last year i decided to have rebuilt head put on my car (plus a few other things...cost me $1300). 1 month later i got water in my gas tank from a sh*tty gas station. 1 month after that (2 mos after it was done) my brand new head gasket blew and my car died and i had to fork out $400 to get it fixed. less than a month after that i wrecked my car and my car ins. claims i never had full coverage (when i added it 3 weeks prior). i dropped $900 for parts and before the car was painted my radiator blew and injectors started leaking (thanks to the accident) and now i need to shell out $600 to get my car painted.

so...welcome to serious car hell in less than 4 months time!!!

Thats nothing... oh hang on, I had to change my suspension 'cause it was too hard and the tyres were all bubbled (original tires were from Japan).

Maybe I shouldn't whinge.

apparently i'm the only one here with body work experience . the bubbling you're seeing is most likely rust growing. go down to your local Napa to get supplies. pick up some "Extend". after you sand the surface rust, stick some Extend on to kill/stop the rust. then you add the new bondo, spreading it as smooth as possible. they make a plastic bondo spreader that is pretty cheap. finally you need a sanding block and the right sanding paper.

for a begginer it's best to use the sanding block and try to only sand in one direction, making only one pass over the bondo at a time. sanding back and fourth (unless your used to it) can cause the bondo spot to look "wavey" after it's painted rather than flat and smooth.

after you get to Napa tell them the things you need (extend, sanding block, sand paper, and bondo) and they can further explain how to use each product.

I'll chime in. The bubbling can be a number of things. Like Ami said it could be rust growing. I can also be due to bad prep work and the paint, primer, or filler that hasn't stuck. water trapped in there (infrequently) can do it too. To check and see what it is get your trusty crappy pocket knife from your tool box and dig at the bubbles You may then discover the cause. Push hard enought to break through the other side if you suspect you're rusted through. I have seen bondo jobs bad enough that a torch has been used to burn the crap off to get to bare metal (You can lose paint on the back side doing this). I have a fiberglass bodied car with bubbles in it from bad bodywork prep by the previous owner (that won't be rust!!). Good luck.

darolh, i'm sure you can appreciate this as being funny. back in the day when had a small restoration shop going we took in a '66 (sh*t, it might of been a '65) SS Malibu. we were supposed to just fix a couple of dents and paint. got the car to the shop and realized it was fender to fender and bumper to bumper full of bondo. we tried to talk the guy into replacement parts but he was cheap and wanted all the old bondo out and new bondo in. i think we ended up using 10-15 gallons of bondo !

anyway, there was so much bondo to remove (i got voted for bondo removal, DOH!) i ended up getting concentrated (house) paint stripper. it would straight make the bondo scrape out like butter. in a couple of spots i actually found (still) soft bondo that was covered by a second layer of bondo. WTF?

it's scary what some "backyard bodymen" will do to their cars. LOL

I feel all your pain but, mine started last year summer and continues until now. School just gave out i had been saving for a bout three months to get a new paint job for my car, i said i'm going to be different so i'm painting my car candy apple red, the cost of paint, clear coat and other supplies $700, then labor was another 650 plus tax so in total i spent about 1500 dollars on the paint job now i m flat ass broke. In less than a week heading south on a local road a hid runs in front of my car ( as if i was the only car on the road) i had to stop , not jamming brakes stop but stop not to hit this nut. so he runs back to his mother( by this time i had a really bad feeling that something terrifying is going to happen) no sooner than i had the feeling this guy cuts across the far right and crushed the back of my " Brand new,still fresh paint smelling, $1500 paint job. Man i was so angry that if you were to crack and egg on my head i would ask you if you wanted your egg scrambled or well done. The worst part is i was driving on pip and the guy who hit me did not get a ticket so his insurance did not pay me for my damages.
SO i bury the hatchet and buy a crx, which i had happen to buy two days after scholl had re-opened( oh and this is in college , where if you miss three days they kick you out). So i was already in the shit. So after i bought the crx four days later the bearings spun, so i order a Zc which was supposed to take about 3 weeks, which was fine but then the unthinkable (Sept 11),this delayed the shipment of the motor for 2 months so i sold the crx and got me another hatch which is now my badass dx( which is out of commision right now because i just put in a sohc vtech, but now the bitch starts, then shuts down after about a couple of seconds ain't that a bitch).

man body work is the easiest shiznit ever. i started it when i was like 15 not knowing anything and everything i've ever done has come out perfect. it just depends on how good you are with your hands some people just can't do it...some people can do it without any practice time at all
